Nothing is Something!

Posted on Jan 5th, 2006 by Yuri : Dharma girl Yuri
Remember the Degrassi Zit remedy song? "Everybody wants something, they'll never give up." The trend of society today is everybody wanting something and they never give up, a car, a  house,  more clothes, more furniture/decor for the house, to be on top, to be beautiful, to be ageless, to be immortal. When there is so much want, it can be stressful and so there is more hatred, greed, jealousy, violence and crime, suicides and war.

I started reading "Tuesdays with Morrie" and it was really inspiring. The man was dying yet he is quite positive about his situation. He has a disease that slowly cause his body and limbs to break down and lose function on them yet he manage to keep an uplift spirit. He says " It's only horrible if you see it that way...It's horrible to watch my body slowly wilt away to nothing. But it's also wonderful because of all the time I get to say goodbye."

Wow! That is wisdom. So perhaps having nothing is something. Because when there is nothing, there is potential to have something but we do not want that something. We want nothing because nothing is that opportunity for change. It  is the opportunity that  allows everything and anything that is possible. For example, if a writer needs to write a story. He needs to start from a blank page or nothing before ideas come and get  recorded. What about homeless people? They have nothing yet they are in so much suffering? The nothing I am referring to means the nothing that comes after your basic necessities of life have been met such as food, shelter, clothing.

Monks and nuns have nothing and they seem perfectly content. But don't they have peace, love? Isn't that something? Great peace and love is the product of having nothing. Nothing = no possession, no fear, no worries, no anger, no jealousy, no greed, no hatred, no attachments...no problems. When we have so much something, it clouds our minds from clarity, wisdom.

Wisdom is like the mirror of a lake. It is crystal clear from surface to the bottom. No residue, no suspended solids. When there are storms, waves and ripples, we can not see through to the bottom and it becomes clouded like when we are too busy at life that we forget about living it. We suffer because we associate life with having many something and we value something as normal and valuable.

Sometimes..actually I think society or norm thinking is nuts. Yes. NUTS! Ya, I said it. I have Big urges to go opposite to it. Hell, perhaps that is the answer!!! Do everything that is opposite of what the majority of the world thinks. Lavish eating = eating simpicity, Big house = cozy place, luxury car = midsize/small or walk/bus,  eating meat = vegetarian/vegan/raw, eating fast food = eating whole food, buying brand clothes = buying warm clothes, having children = no children/adopt/pets,  etc. Well, what if what the majority of the world do is positive, peaceful, loving? Then what will you do with your idea of going opposite to it? I would say there is no problems therefore no need to go opposite to it :)

Something to think about.

Awesome Yuri!   Yes to dancing to your own drummer, yes to finding the needs and filling them, and not worrying about all the wants….but remember the ethers are abundant, there is no lack….except of education….let us all rise in understanding…create a thread and add your thoughts to the book discussion!

Tuesdays with Morrie is a favorite of mine.  I try to listen to it at least once a year.

Wil………I am not sure about abundance………

It takes millenia for the earth to make oil………….it is not taking us long to use it all up….or is that just hype?

I read an article ………don’t remember where…….that said at the rate we are using up our resources ……………..we will be seriously low on natural resources by 2050.

I keep reading about waste…….pollution…..and lack of resources………

I want my children to have clean water and food for my grandchildren………should I be concerned?

Thanks for the feedback everyone..^^ Yes, when there are inspiring books, it is nice to flip through them and remind ourselves what is our priority in life. I agree with you Heidi, there is a deal of waste and consumerizing. Both corporate and individual. More greed =  less nature, soil, water, food species and biodiversity which then produce  non-sustainable systems on earth. Yes, we all should be concern about our resources. It is hard to see fast results but each of us can make little steps and as a group make a big difference such as  zaadz’s philosophy.

1. Recycle - reduce, reuse, recycle
2. Food - eat less, finish all on plate or eat less meat (the reduction will decrease the water use / pollution. For example, in slaughter house sanitation.
3. Save water - turn tap off when brushing teeth/washing face
4.  Do not use the toilet/sink as a dumping trash container - some things will pollute the water system.
5. Do not support companies who are not environmentally friendly.
6. Use environmental friendly and biodegradable products such as detergents, cleaning solvents,  use less chemicals.

Do we have more to add to the list?

Thanks for those ideas Yuri.  I surely am going to try being much more conscientous.

I buy as much as possible from thrift stores.  I know it is gross to some people, but I just don’t understand why so much new stuff has to be made when our thrift stores are packed with stuff.  It is alot cheaper.  I can get 10 outfits for my son for the price of one new outfit.   Our local Salvation Army had so much stuff that they had to give a bunch of it away just to make room.  Also when you buy from Salvation Army and Goodwill the proceeds “usually” go to a good cause as well.

I try to get gas at our local “small town” gas station most of the time to help support the small business owner in my community.

But it feels like so little……….I am so much aware today tho ………it urks me when I take trash bag after trash bag to the dumpster.  I have already decided that when I get in my new house I am going to seperate my trash ………cans……paper……plastics…….etc………and make a compost pile for the garden I plan to start this spring.

Hi Heidi, your welcome about ideas. That is most of the ideas I am aware of. If I think of more or if others out there have some, do post it up. It is great to hear that you buy from second hand store. I love those stores and I don’t mind wearing use clothes. The prices are very reasonable and some styles, you can not get at clothing stores. Is there value village where you are located? The ones here are far from my place.

That is great you are going to separate and recycle. If you find some bins and use one bin for each things such as cans in one bin, papers in a bag in the bin and throw the items in when you have them then you do not have to resort it again.  Compost is a great idea! I can not compost because thefre is no garden here where I live.

You can put your compost on house plants or just throw it in a park. The point is closing the circuit. Returning the matter to the earth from which it came. Making soil is one of the most healing things we can do.
Thrift stores- So eco-chic! Vintage is in style baby!
You were talking about doing the opposite of everyone- I have felt like living the extreme just to balance everyone else out.
But honestly- everything we buy has the embodied energy of the journey it took to arrive in our hands. Usually the price tag on an object does not reflect the True Cost of what resources went into producing it. It takes energy to manufacture things and ship things. Energy= fossil fuels or nuclear usually- both take their toll.
This is and will be a common theme in my blog- along with how food choices make a difference.
Check it out
Thanks for your passion and ideas yuri!
